United States against Cuba in semi finals

SALTILLO, Coahuila, July 25, 2008.- United States defeated Mexico 3-0 and moved to the semi final round where they will meet Cuba in the next to the last day of action in the NORCECA Junior Volleyball Tournament.

The superiority of the Americans was evident since the early moments of the match, where they showed consistency on defense and a good counter attack in route to the victory by score of 25-18, 25-17, 25-21.

Backed by a noisy crowd that packed the Nazario Ortiz Gym, the host team tried with their serves to break the reception and to weaken the American attack, but over anxious and some kind tired in the face of the strong opponent, the plan stayed just in hope, despite their effort to return the fans’support.

The best scorers of the second quartefinals match were Michelle Bartsch (12) and Darcy Dorton (11), the only in double figures, as also Cecilia Rios, who had 13 tallies.

Paula Weishoff, coach of United States: “I knew that a lot of people was going to attend, I was nervous because of the inexperience of my players, but I am happy because my team won. I like the way the Mexicans play, they do it with big heart and fight all the time.”

Samuel Cibrián, coach of México: “United States played a great defensive game, we didn’t expect that response in defense, I though their biggest potencial was going to be in the blocking, but they returned a lot of balls. We failed, is one of our worst matches, and I am not taking anything to them who played very well, but we missed many serves.”

Darcy Dorton, captain of United States: “Our opponents played a great match. It was fun, fabulous to play at their home. We did it well, we make several errors, but we won.”

Xitlali Herrera, captain of México: “We made many errors, failed many serves. The pass and attack, despite some problemas was not that bad, but the too many errors in our attack caused to lose the rhythm and the match.”.
